Choose real-touch orchids where guests will stand within arm's reach of the flower, and standard fabric-petal orchids everywhere else. What the two constructions actually are
"Silk" is trade shorthand rather than a fibre description. A silk orchid petal is almost always a polyester fabric that has been cut, printed, heat-formed and wired. It takes colour printing well, reads convincingly from across a room, and feels dry and slightly textured if someone pinches it.
"Real-touch" describes a petal with a soft polymer coating over a formed core. The coating gives the waxy surface, the slight coolness and the flex that a living moth orchid has, which is why real-touch survives the moment a guest reaches out to check. You will also see it sold as "coated" or "latex-feel"; these are the same idea under different names.
Two points matter when you read our listings. First, our catalogue does not carry a structured material field per SKU (most lines are recorded as mixed materials), so the only reliable construction label is the product title: seven orchid lines carry "REAL TOUCH" in the title, and none carries "silk". Second, construction and scale are linked in our range. If you need a real-touch orchid for a reception desk at 50cm, we do not stock one; the closest options are a standard 60cm ceramic-planter phalaenopsis for the desk, or a 110cm real-touch plant placed on the floor beside it. The one-metre rule
The single most useful test is viewing distance. Beyond roughly one metre, a well-made fabric orchid and a real-touch orchid are very hard to tell apart by eye. Within arm's reach, and especially where people touch, the difference is immediate.
- Touch zone (under 1m, handled): reception counters, spa treatment rooms, restaurant tables, bathroom vanities, top tables at events. Real-touch earns its place here, or choose a format where the flowers sit above hand height.
- Look zone (1m to 3m): console tables, lobby side tables, shop-floor plinths. Standard construction performs well; the pot finish and the arch of the spray matter more than the petal surface.
- Distance zone (over 3m, or above eye level): window schemes, shelving above head height, stage dressing. Standard construction every time; real-touch adds cost that nobody will notice.
A worked example: a boutique hotel dressing a reception counter, two lobby consoles and a lift lobby might specify one 110cm real-touch plant on the floor at the end of the counter, two 60cm ceramic-planter phalaenopsis on the consoles, and an 85cm bush orchid in the lift lobby. The real-touch lines are the 150cm giant white real-touch orchid plant (189 flowers), its purple 150cm counterpart, the 110cm white real-touch orchid plant (41 flowers) and the 110cm black real-touch orchid plant, plus pink and yellow 110cm versions. Stock on these lines is shallow compared with the small potted orchids, so check the live quantity on each product page before you specify more than one or two of a colour.
When real-touch is worth the extra cost
Real-touch justifies itself in three situations, and only three.
- The piece is handled or inspected. Spa reception, a treatment-room shelf, a restaurant pass or a hotel check-in desk. Guests test flowers with their fingers; a coated petal passes, a fabric petal does not.
- The piece is photographed close up. Show homes, hotel marketing shoots and interior design portfolios. Macro and phone photography pick up fabric weave; the coated surface photographs with a natural sheen.
- The piece is the single hero in a space. One statement orchid in a small lobby carries the whole impression. Spending more on that one item is better value than upgrading every orchid in the building.
Outside those situations, standard construction is the better buy. A 100cm dark pink cymbidium orchid plant or an 85cm white deluxe bush orchid gives the same presence at console or floor level, and the 150cm pink potted orchid display matches the real-touch giants for scale where no one will touch it.
A note for retailers: real-touch is a display and specification product in our range rather than a shelf-volume line, because the real-touch pieces are tall floor plants. If you want a price ladder within orchids for a gift or homeware shelf, build it on height and pot finish instead: a 46cm white orchid in a gold pot as the entry piece, a 60cm white orchid in a white and gold ceramic planter as the step up, and a cymbidium or bush orchid as the statement piece.
Florists and stylists: stems, not real-touch plants
Florists building bespoke arrangements work with stems, and our orchid stems are standard construction. Checking construction before you order
Because construction is only labelled in the title, a few checks save a wasted order.
- Read the title first. If a line does not say REAL TOUCH, treat it as standard construction.
- Check the pot dimensions against the location. The real-touch plants sit in a 27cm weighted pot and spread 40cm to 70cm, so they need floor space, not a counter.
- Check the flower count where stated. 41 flowers at 110cm reads as an elegant, open spray; 189 flowers at 150cm reads as a full, dense display. Choose by the density the space needs.
- Buy one to evaluate. Every orchid plant is sold individually, so a single real-touch plant can sit inside a £150 minimum order alongside other lines you need.

- Check live stock before reordering. Real-touch lines hold limited quantities and colours can sell through; ask us about continuity if a multi-site project needs matching pieces later.
Fire and outdoor questions
Neither construction changes the fire or outdoor status of our orchids. No orchid line is sold as fire-retardant or UV-stabilised; all are indoor display lines. Keep them out of prolonged direct sun and clear of heaters, candles, cooking equipment and naked flames. Frequently asked questions
Do you stock real-touch phalaenopsis stems?
No. Our real-touch orchids are potted display plants at 110cm and 150cm. Our phalaenopsis stems (100cm) and mini orchid stems (80cm) are standard construction and are sold individually.
Can I mix real-touch and standard orchids in the same scheme?
Yes, and it is usually the most cost-effective approach. Put the real-touch piece where people touch or photograph it and use standard potted orchids further away. Keep the colour family and pot finish consistent so the scheme reads as one.
Why are the real-touch plants so much taller than the other orchids?
They are designed as floor-standing statement displays with many stems in one weighted pot. For tabletop orchids at 46cm to 65cm we list standard construction only.
Is there a structured material field I can filter on?
Not reliably. Most lines record mixed materials, so filter by the REAL TOUCH wording in the title, or ask our sales team to confirm construction on a specific SKU before you specify it.
